Crochet & Knitted Fish

FREE PATTERN.
We first designed and published this pattern way before we had a website. We were involved in putting on an installation in Doncaster Market to celebrate the DN Weekend. I'll try and find some photos from 2015 when we yarn bombed Doncaster!
I'm sharing this pattern now as there is a local event happening and residents are being asked to make fish for the games, so here it is.

Knitted Fish
Use needles appropriate to yarn thickness eg DK and 4mm needles.
Pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations.
· ssk - slip, slip knit = slip 2sts individually knitwise, then insert tip of left needle into the front of the 2 just slipped and knit them together. if you are unsure about ssk then substitute sl1, K1, psso
· kfb - knit into the front and then into the back of the stitch
Cast on 20 sts and work 9 rows of K1, P1 rib
Tail Decrease section:-
Row 1 K1, K2tog; rpt from to last 2sts, K2 (14sts)
Row 2 K2tog to end of row (7sts)
Row 3 K2tog, sl1,K2tog, psso, K2tog (3sts)
Knit 1 row
Body Increase section:-
Row 1 K1, m1, K1, m1, K1 (5sts)
Row 2 Knit to end
Row 3 K1, kfb, knit to last 2sts, kfb, K1 (7sts)
Row 4 Knit to end
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until there are 15 sts
Knit at least 8 rows straight (=4 ridges of garter stitch)
Head Decrease section:-
Row 1 K1, ssk, K to last 3sts, K2tog, K1 (13sts)
Row 2 Knit to end
Row 3 Knit to end
Repeat these 3 rows once (11sts)
Repeat rows 1 & 2, 3 times (5sts)
Next row K1, sl1, K2tog, psso, K1 (3sts)
Finally K3tog and fasten off
Leave any loose yarns so we can attach the fish to the net. Leave plain or add beads, sequins, or buttons for eyes , felt for fins etc to embellish as desired.
You can also use up scraps of yarn to make your fish striped.
Crochet Fish
Use a crochet hook slightly larger than recommended for your
yarn, eg DK yarn, 4.5mm hook
Pattern uses UK crochet terms.
Row 1 Ch2, 2dc in 2nd ch from hook, turn
Row 2 Ch1, 2dc in each st (4sts), turn
Row 3 Ch1, working in back loops only (blo) 2dc in 1st st,
1dc in each st to last dc, 2dc in last st, turn (6sts)
Row 4 Ch1, working in front loops only (flo) 2dc in 1st st,
1dc in each stitch to last dc, 2dc in last st , turn (8sts)
Row 5 Rpt row 3, turn (10sts)
Row 6 Ch1, working in flo, 1dc in each st, turn
Row 7 Ch1, working in blo 1dc in each st, turn
Row 8 Ch2 (Counts as 1st htr), working under both loops 1htr
in next st and each st across , turn
Row 9 Ch3, miss the htr at base of ch3, dc in next st, *ch3,
miss 1 st, dc in next st; rpt from * x2, ch3 ss in 2nd ch, turn
( 5 3ch loops)
Row 10 slst into first ch sp, ch3, dc in next ch sp; rpt from x3, ch3, ss into last ch sp, turn (4 ch loops)
Row 11 ss into 1st ch sp, [ch3, dc into next ch sp]twice, ch3, ss into last ch sp, turn (3 ch loops )
Row 12 ss into 1st ch sp, ch3, dc in next ch sp, ch3 ss in last ch sp, turn (2 ch loops)
Row 13 ss into 1st ch sp, ch1, 2dc in 1st ch sp, dc in next dc, 2dc in next ch sp, turn (5dc)
Row 14 (tail fins) ch 6, dc in 3rd ch from hook, htr in next ch, 1tr in each of next 2 ch, *tr in next dc of previous row, dc in next dc, ss in next dc , dc in next dc, htr in last dc, turn, ch 6 and rpt from to *, ss into central dc and fasten off.
Leave any loose yarns so we can attach the fish to the net. Get creative with scraps of yarn for stripes, or pre-string beads onto your yarn for some sparkle, remembering to place beads while working wrong side rows so that they appear on the right side of the work (the right side of this pattern is the one that shows up ridges of unused loops from the blo/flo rows)
